Material Characterization Engineer (SEM / X-Ray CT / XRD)

Key job responsibilities

As a Material Characterization Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting technical lab work which supports material microstructure investigations by using SEM, X-Ray Microcomputing Tomography and XRD equipment. A majority of time will be spent in a lab environment, so enthusiasm for hands-on work and developing lab procedures is important. To enable this, you will be an expert in the following:

• Metallographic sample preparation

• X-ray inspection methods (Microcomputed tomography) 

• SEM inspection methods and measurements

• Chemical analysis with XRD equipment and analyses

• Lab equipment procurement and maintenance

DESCRIPTION

Characterizing material and supervising material characterization activities at the SEM, X-Ray computed tomography (X-CT) and XRD equipment. 

Characterizing coupons/specimens that were tested destructively or manufactured with different processes.

Reporting the results and/or data from the analyses and proven capability of interpreting the results.

Supervising students for their characterization work with their specimens, always ensuring safe usage of the related equipment.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical and material engineering, or material engineering or chemistry/chemical engineering,

• Basic knowledge on SEM, X-CT and XRD principles and willing to advance with the active utilization of the equipment,

• Knowledge of metallic, polymeric and composites material is a plus,

• Experience in using VGStudio Max or similar image processing software is a plus,

• Being familiar with the microstructural, chemical features of common metallic material,

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present data, and plans with high confidence upon task assignments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2+ years of hands-on experience with SEM equipment (SEM, FIB), and operational experience,

• Experience in an aerospace-related lab environment,

• Experience with method development in X-ray inspection (2D and computed tomography) and associated measurement software,

• Experience in writing lab reports,

• Essential know-how of major material analysis and failure analysis tools are helpful,
